Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
I have read that many people preparing for possible systemic domestic food shortages like Mountain House freeze-dried and dehydrated food. My inquiry is how does Mountain House compares (nutrition, price, and longevity) to other comparable foods like those sold at efoodsdirect: http://www.efoodsdirect.com/products.html
Thank you. |

Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
I just ordered $100 worth of mountain house foods for sampling, I'll give a report once i have tried it. It's actually at my UPS box right now, i just dont have the time to go get it.
Also I ordered from here http://survival-warehouse.com/ at about 10pm on monday and it arrived today. |
Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
Whatever you do, don't buy a large quantity of food that you haven't tried before. Buy a sampler pack and try it.
Having used MH in the past on backpacking trips, I wasn't about to experiment with anything else. And at wholesale pricing I couldn't pass it up. The beef stew and pre-cooked eggs are a bit bland but everything else I've had is quite good. The pork chops and beef stroganoff are excellent. If that efood is dehydrated, MH will last much longer. I would try both and then decide. |
Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
OK well I've tried my first meal of mountain house foods, it was the chicken stew and it was quite good. preparation is easy, 2 cups boiled water into the bag and seal the bag up.
I have also tried the organic mangoes and they are awesome. The wife has a corn allergy and most dishes have corn starch, so just a heads up there. I do plan on trying efoodsdirect as well, so I will report back as to which is the better of the two. |
Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
i tried a few mountain house foods and they were ok...the eggs and bacon were like a bad buffet with powered eggs.
i like backpackers pantry and alpineaire foods.....the alpineaire desserts were good and the backpackers pantry entrees were good....lots of weird ones too. |
Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
Both are garbage filled with poison.
If it isn't GMO free/organic you are introducing cancer into your system. |
Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
MH is loaded with modified food starch (and often has a high salt content, too). There's a reason everyone says MH tastes best, and it's not actually the food itself. It's the huge amount of flavor enhancers they use. Modified food starch triggers migraines for me (and many other people), and MH meals will have me violently vomiting and in intense pain in only 20 minutes.
Some people can't tolerate massive amounts of modified food starch. If you or anyone who might be sharing your food gets migraine headaches, has allergies to modified food starches, or shouldn't ingest a lot of salt, avoid MH like the plague and read the labels carefully on any other FD or dehydrated foods. You should always try a sample before heavily investing in a type of storage food. Even people who don't usually have problems with modified food starches might have problems with MH, since the amount of flavor enhancers seem to be far higher than what's usually encountered in canned soups or other processed food you'd buy from the grocery store. |
Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
Yea I wouldn't want to eat them every day, but in a pinch they arent bad. Like I say my wife can't eat them due to the corn starch so it pretty much makes them useless for us.

Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
btw the efoodsdirect say no GMO, no MSG and no imported foods.

Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
All modified food starch is usually is a corn starch that has been modified so when it is used as a thickener in preserved foods, it does not turn watery. Modified corn starch is used in home canning for pie fillings and other items that need a thickened base like gravy. It is best used in pot pies as a thickener as opposed to plain corn starch which will get watery as it sits after cooling.
That said, I would never put all of my prep eggs in one basket. If you've only sampled some food items, try imagining if it were the only food you had to eat and how quickly you would get food fatigue. Variety really IS the spice of life. Keep instant foods and quick foods, but also keep foods that you cook. MH is great for a 3 day camping trip, but I wouldn't want to eat it for a month. Or longer. |

Basically the mountain house stuff is good for what I had intended to use it for, but I wouldn't want to eat it regularly and I don't plan on buying a two years supply. |
Re: Mountain House v. efoodsdirect
Has anyone tried the eFoodsDirect.com food yet? The fact that they are not GMO, have no MSG and are USA grown is attractive to me.
I was thinking of getting their 7-Day Responder (65 bucks) to get a feel for what the food tastes like. http://www.efoodsdirect.com/products...der-weeka.html |
